Religious Education

At Danesfield School, our intent is to develop curious, respectful and reflective learners who are equipped to understand the diverse world around them. Through the Kapow Religion and Worldviews curriculum, children develop critical thinking skills, deepen their knowledge of religions and non-religious worldviews, and learn to reflect thoughtfully on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We aim to nurture spiritual development while helping pupils appreciate the richness and diversity of different communities and cultures.

Our curriculum follows an enquiry-based approach, encouraging children to explore meaningful questions about belief, identity, community, belonging and values. Learning is carefully sequenced from Preschool to Year 6, enabling children to build their knowledge and understanding progressively over time. In the Early Years, learning is closely linked to Development Matters and supports children's personal, social and emotional development alongside their growing understanding of the world.

Each enquiry begins with a thought-provoking question that encourages children to consider a concept from their own experiences before exploring how it is understood within different religious and non-religious worldviews. Children are encouraged to ask questions, discuss ideas, examine different perspectives and justify their opinions using evidence from their learning. Through this process, they develop the confidence to think critically, communicate respectfully and appreciate that people may hold different beliefs and values.

Oracy is an important part of learning in Religion and Worldviews at Danesfield. Children are given regular opportunities to discuss ideas, ask thoughtful questions, articulate their opinions and respond respectfully to the views of others. Through structured discussion, debate and collaborative enquiry, pupils learn to justify their thinking using evidence from their learning while developing confidence as speakers and listeners. These experiences help children to recognise that people may hold different beliefs and perspectives, fostering respectful dialogue and deeper understanding.

A key strength of our Religion and Worldviews curriculum is the opportunity for children to engage with authentic, real-world experiences. We believe that meaningful encounters help bring learning to life and deepen understanding. Wherever possible, children visit places of worship and significance, such as churches, mosques, and synagogues, allowing them to experience religious spaces first-hand. We also welcome visitors from a range of faiths and worldviews into school, enabling pupils to hear personal stories, ask questions and learn directly from individuals within our wider community. These experiences help children make meaningful connections between classroom learning and lived experiences, fostering respect, empathy and understanding.

Throughout the curriculum, children are encouraged to reflect on what they have learned and consider how different beliefs and values influence the lives of individuals and communities. Opportunities for discussion, creativity and personal reflection allow pupils to develop their own sense of identity while recognising and valuing the beliefs of others. Through this approach, children gain the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to thrive in a diverse and interconnected world. The curriculum encourages pupils to approach unfamiliar beliefs and perspectives with curiosity and respect, supporting them in becoming informed, open-minded and compassionate members of society.

Collective Worship

At Danesfield School, collective worship provides a valuable opportunity for pupils to come together as a community to reflect, celebrate and develop a sense of belonging. Collective worship supports pupils' self-development (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) and encourages them to consider important questions about themselves, their relationships with others and the wider world.

Our collective worship programme is rooted in our school values of Courage, Respect, Ambition and Kindness. Through stories, images, music, discussions, reflection and shared experiences, children are encouraged to explore how these values can guide their actions and contribute positively to their school, local community and wider society.

A range of worship experiences contribute to school life. Weekly celebration assemblies recognise effort, achievement and personal growth, helping children to value both their own successes and those of others. Singing assemblies bring the school community together through music, promoting well-being, enjoyment and shared participation. Songs may include pieces that reflect themes such as hope, peace, courage, kindness and community.

Class-based worship and reflection sessions provide opportunities for children to engage with stories, current events, ethical issues and thought-provoking questions. Drawing on a range of religious and non-religious sources, these sessions encourage children to listen respectfully, share their ideas and consider different viewpoints. Resources from organisations such as Young Citizens further support pupils in exploring themes including democracy, fairness, responsibility, belonging and community participation.

Collective worship also provides valuable opportunities for developing oracy skills. Children are encouraged to share their reflections, discuss themes and values, and listen thoughtfully to the experiences and viewpoints of others. Through age-appropriate discussion and reflection, pupils learn to communicate with confidence, empathy and respect, strengthening their ability to contribute positively to their community while developing a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Through collective worship, we aim to inspire children to develop a strong moral compass, a sense of responsibility towards others and an appreciation of the diverse beliefs, experiences and perspectives that shape our world. By fostering reflection, discussion, curiosity and wonder, collective worship helps children to live out the values of Courage, Respect, Ambition and Kindness both within school and beyond.
